thanks for your participation and support for this year’s Learning Festival. Did you miss the registration? Or do you want to join more workshops? Although registrations have officially closed, you are still welcome to attend the workshop that you’re interested in!

You will also be entitled to a free goodie bag which you can collect at the Student Hub after attending the workshop.

LEARNING FESTIVAL 09 WORKSHOPS

Finally! The workshops are up! Remember the registration is on the 24th-26th August 2009! 11am- 4pm. Remember to get your friends down to sign up as well!

Here are the workshops and brief descriptions!

Workshop 1: Using Debate in the Classrooms

Venue: 3-01-TR 27A

Time: 1.00 pm – 2.00 pm

Details: Learn how to use the power of debate to motivate students and build self-
confidence! This workshop highlights the essentials of debating and competitive debates and the basics of how to use debate in a classroom setting.

Workshop 2: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Venue: Gymnasium

Time: 12.30 pm – 1.30 pm

Details: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a Brazilian martial art and sport that relies on the knowledge of the limitations of the human anatomy. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend himself against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper technique.It emphasizes ground fighting techniques and submission holds involving joint-locks and chokeholds. BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.

In this workshop, you will be taught the basics of BJJ, focusing more on self defense techniques. You will experience the effectiveness of BJJ and be amazed at how simply and successfully you can defend yourself against a bigger or stronger opponent, with the appropriate technique.

Workshop 3: The Arts – Centre of our Life

Venue: 3-01-TR 27

Time: 12.00 pm – 1.00 pm

Details: The arts nurture our creative self, they develop our sense of belonging and sense of resourcefulness, they stimulate participation either by looking or listening or through direct involvement. During this interactive workshop students are encouraged to work in small groups and discover how with materials from their environment, they can design artistic expressions in different forms.

Workshop 4: Western Calligraphy 101

Venue: 7-01-TR 56

Time: 11.00 am – 1.15 pm

Details: This workshop introduces you to the elegant yet simple Chancery Italic calligraphy style, which dates back to the 16th century. We’ll look at how to hold a pen, make basic shapes with it, and move on to combining these shapes into letters and numerals. You’ll discover that calligraphy is both art and science, a combination of aesthetics and logic. Calligraphy has limitless uses in and outside the classroom: greetings cards, decorative envelopes, posters, maps, class noticeboards, scrapbooks … not forgetting love letters!

Workshop 5: Cupcake Design I

Venue: FCS Lab (07-02-08)

Time: 10.30 am – 12.30 pm

Details: Participants will be taught decorative skills for their cupcake. Each student will get to do 4 cupcakes of animals – Monkey, lion, tiger and zebra.

No. of Participants: 20

Remarks: $20, Participants to arrive 10 min before start of class

Workshop 6: Cupcake Design II

Time: 12.30 pm – 2.30 pm

Workshop 7: Secret Shores of Singapore

Venue: 3-01-TR 32

Time: 12.00 pm – 1.00 pm

Details: 300-600 recent photos and stories of adventures and discoveries on our living shores. From Changi to Tuas, Sentosa to the Sisters Islands and beyond. Nemos, sea snakes, living corals and more. The talk will also share about some of the threats to our shores, and the many ways ordinary people can make a difference about our little-known shores.

Workshop 8: Let’s House I

Venue: Sports Room

Time: 10.30 am – 11.30 am

Details: Interested in a cardio work-out the fun way? Seen aerobics dance but deem it ‘boring’ or too intimidated to try it? Well, come on down and join us this coming Learning Festival where aerobics dance will be brought alive with flavour from House!

Time: 12.30 pm – 1.30 am

Workshop 10: Monopoly Workshop

Venue: Jeux@UID

Time: 12.00 pm – 2.00 pm

Details: You think you know Monopoly? If you think that Monopoly is a boring long game of 2 hours, this workshop is just for you. This workshop will not only teach you the ‘real deal’ of Monopoly, but also life learning points in which you can even apply it in your daily life. Sign up and we guarantee that you’ll never see Monopoly the same again.

Time: 11.00 am – 12.00 pm

Details: Tchoukball players don’t need to be tall, short, light or heavy to play in their positions.

Our game’s motto is ‘A Sport For All’, and it literally is that. Our players come in all shapes and sizes for one simple reason: play only passes from one team to another when a team tries to score. There are no interceptions, no tackles, and no physical contact between players.

Time: 11.00 am – 12.00 pm

Details: Learn how to belly dance, with tips on basic belly dancing moves and techniques, which includes snake arms, chest circles, shoulder shimmy, shimmy moves and a few others.

Remarks: Ladies only. Participants to wear workout clothes, and bring a hip scarf if possible.

Workshop 15: Belly Dancing II

Venue: Dance Studio

Time: 1.00 pm – 2.00 pm

Workshop 16: All You Need To Know About Managing Your Money

Details: Experienced practitioners from the industry will share with us simple, yet effective, money management ideas. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to learn the skills to apply a simple and readily applicable system with the essence of personal money management

Workshop 17: A Beginner’s Guide to Hungarian and Hungarians

Venue: 3-01-TR 31

Time: 11.00 am – 12.00 pm

Details: This workshop aims to introduce some of the basic linguistic features of Hungarian and teach participants some survival language skills in a fun, interactive format. You can also learn a bit about Hungarian culture, traditions and the country itself.

Workshop 18: Ultimate Frisbee Pickup!

Venue: Hockey Pitch

Time: 11.00 am – 1.00 pm

Details: Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact team sport steadily gaining popularity in Singapore & worldwide. The NTU/NIE Ultimate Frisbee team would like to make use of this workshop to introduce this exciting game which integrates the features of Soccer, Basketball, American football & Netball to the NIE community. We will be conducting a simple pickup session down at the hockey pitch, so what are you waiting for? Disc in with us now!
